Description: Adapted by Barbara Fields from the books of Gertrude Chandler Warner Sound Off: Letters to the Editor . . . PLAYHOUSE CONNIVES WITH NEWSPAPER, LIBRARIES TO PUSH READING ON KIDS THE BOXCAR CHILDREN is Latest Kid Addiction Dear Editor: Everywhere you look these days, children are lured by the thrill of some new obsession. But who would have thought that venerated institutions like the Lincoln Community Playhouse, the Lincoln Journal Star and the Lincoln City Libraries would be behind the latest youth fixation ñ clandestine reading! Kids in record numbers got hooked on reading last year in the ìA Book For All Kidsî program. This year, young people are plummeting deeper into the reading habit as they sneak into corners to pore over THE BOXCAR CHILDREN by Gertrude C. Warner. With reading comes the very real danger that kids will improve their comprehension, self-confidence, and communication. Do we parents want to run the risk that our kids will actually get smarter than we are? And not only are kids reading of their own free will, the Playhouse is going to present a play based on THE BOXCAR CHILDREN. This story depicts a group of siblings during the Depression era who find themselves orphaned and homeless. Do they let themselves get sucked into the welfare system? No! They actually run away and make their home in an abandoned railroad boxcar. Pursued by the authorities and a mysterious stranger, the children discover the rewards and perils of life on the run, as well as the joy of keeping their family together. Is this what we want our kids exposed to? Self-reliance, devotion to family, independence, resourcefulness, and a sense of value? I say we should let the Journal-Star, the Playhouse and the Libraries know exactly how we feel!!! How about it, parents of Lincoln? ñ ìReadî in the Face SHOW DATES AND TIMES Friday, March 4, 2005, 7:00PM Saturday, March 5, 2005, 1:00 & 4:00 PM Sunday, March 6 2005, 1:00* & 4:00 PM Thursday, March 10, 7:00 PM Friday, March 11, 2005, 7:00 PM Saturday, March 12, 2005, 1:00 & 4:00 PM Sunday, March 13, 1:00 & 4:00 PM Thursday, March 17, 7:00 PM Friday, March 18, 2005, 7:00PM Saturday, March 19, 2005, 2:00 & 4:00 PM Sunday, March 20, 1:00 & 4:00 PM *The 1:00 p.m. performance on Sunday, March 6, will be interpreted for the deaf and hard of hearing by request only.
